Der Hortus Botanicus Lovaniensis (auch als „Kruidtuin“ bekannt) wurde im Jahr 1738 angelegt und ist somit der älteste Botanische Garten Belgiens. Ursprünglich umfasste er nur Kräuter und Heilpflanzen, diente also in erster Linie der medizinischen Forschung. Später wurde der Garten um Zierpflanzen, Nutzpflanzen, seltene Pflanzenarten und Arboreta erweitert. Heute befindet sich auf den 2,2 ha des Gartens eine große Sammlung von Bäumen und Sträuchern, sowie im Gewächshauskomplex eine Vielzahl von Kräutern, Wasserpflanzen und tropischen Gewächsen.
1976 wurde der Hortus Botanicus Lovaniensis durch königlichen Beschluss in den Rang einer „Landschap“ erhoben und die Orangerie zum „Monument“ erklärt.
